Three Cut Shrines in Diablo II

暗黑2的3个神殿废案,这个知识有点冷

Here is a genuinely obscure piece of trivia: in the game, Health Shrines, Mana Shrines and Gem Shrines show up far more often than the rest.

That is because three cut shrines were replaced by them.

They are:

  • Health Exchange 生命交換神殿
  • Mana Exchange 法力交換神殿
  • Shrine of Enirhs 颠倒神殿

What they were meant to do:

Health Exchange:

  • Immediately deducts 50% of current Life and adds five times that amount to current Mana
  • Message: you feel incredibly strengthened.

【The odd part: it deducts Life and adds Mana, so why does the message still say your Life was strengthened?】

Mana Exchange:

  • Immediately deducts 50% of current Mana and adds five times that amount to current Life
  • Message: you feel incredible energy poured into your body.

Shrine of Enirhs:

  • Reverses the player character's name
  • Message: your senses are sharpened.

As the name suggests, Enirhs (Eh-nir-ss) is "Shrine" spelled backwards. The shrine does nothing else, but since your senses are sharpened, I think it would be considerably more entertaining if The Mahim-Oak Curio showed up under Michio Okamura's name and Bverrit Keep under Peter Brevik's (one of the developers).

In testing, though, this shrine had no effect at all.

All three shrines also have designed sound effects, so they were actually fairly complete.

But in the end all of them were disabled, and the method was simply:

  • When the game randomly rolls Health Exchange, replace it with a Health Shrine
  • When it rolls Shrine of Enirhs, substitute a Gem Shrine

So three shrines end up with twice the appearance chance of their kind.

Note that these are one-shot shrines with no duration. If your name gets reversed, you have to find another Shrine of Enirhs to reverse it back.

The shrine hands you overflowing Life and Mana; once you have spent it, its effect is over.

That five-times multiplier still feels absurd, and since players could inflate their stats indefinitely by farming shrines, a mod restoration would have to correct this mechanic before it could work.

On top of that, the game has no overflow mechanic at present.

A few more special shrines:

  • Null Shrine — it does nothing, yet it still has a message: you feel nothing (it is shrine 0, and since shrine selection starts from 1, it never appears).
  • In the development build, Health Shrine doubled your Life and overflowed the maximum Life cap
  • In the development build, Mana Shrine doubled your Mana and overflowed the maximum Mana cap
  • Monster Shrine has its own unique sound, but what actually plays is the Town Portal Shrine's sound

中The Shrine of Nothingness is quite interesting — it lowers the chance of spamming shrine buffs; the Shrine of Enirhs also sounds fun: reversing the name should have some curious effect, like seeing through certain items

中Yes, "you feel nothing", haha

中The effect of the special shrines looks almost forbidden... it would be very interesting if it really appeared on the map

中Nothingness, or...?

中@Rage Winterchill The two shrines that double the numbers — going past the cap is far more magical than a plain refill. (And thinking about it now, the two cut exchange shrines were even more forbidden.)

中@弗拉维 It reminds me that the shrines in Diablo I were also quite forbidden — a permanent boost to one attribute at the permanent cost of another. And that whole idea of trading one thing for another carries something evil about it.

中These abandoned shrines were probably designed by the developers carrying on the design thinking of Diablo I. Once development shifted to Diablo II thinking, these out-of-place leftovers were replaced or dropped. The bookshelves in Act I that drop identify and town portal scrolls are probably the same story: originally they may have dropped skill books like in Diablo I, but once skill books existed they became pointless.

中Hey! Great Lich, thank you for everything you have contributed to the study of this game. I am a Necromancer who has followed you for a very long time. I am so glad you have let more people know Sanctuary — in this restless age the old stories of Sanctuary are being left behind, yet they still shine like jewels. Glad you have not gone quiet on us! I have watched your earlier videos many times over; 2023 to 2026 was a long wait, but it was worth it — nothing is longer than death, after all. Looking forward to your next update!

中Haha, what a thoughtful comment, Dark Wanderer. Fortunately for a Necromancer, waiting is nothing new. Welcome back to camp; the next update will not keep you waiting until the corpses rise again.
